Hazel became a passionate advocate for children and young people with cancer after her teenage son was diagnosed with leukemia in 2018. In 2020 she co-founded Australian Families 4 Genomics to accelerate access to upfront genome sequencing and the discovery of safer, more effective treatments for children and young people with cancer.
