Australian Families 4 Genomics is urging the government to take action to improve the cancer experience for children & young people. Our approach is families working with the clinical, research and scientific communities to provide a family led Centre for whole genome sequencing for children and young people with cancer.
Families would be front and centre in data access and data sharing policies with the Centre acting as the custodian of bio-specimens and genomic data and health information. It would provide a world class collaborative genomics research platform that contributes to fighting childhood cancer. It would attract the brightest researchers and clinicians committed to breakthrough research and open science. The Centre would drive the shift in culture needed to deliver family centred genomics and research.
One of the best ways to get your voice heard by government is to let your local MP know what issues are facing people in their own electorate. As your representative, it is their job to listen. By working together, we can make a difference.
The most powerful letter is the one written by you. However, we also know it can sometimes be hard to know where to start, so to make things easier we’ve prepared this sample letter which you can download and customise.

What Your Letter Should Say
The needs of children and young people with cancer have been ignored for many years despite the enormous need. Childhood cancer research significantly lags behind adults. The drugs used today on children and young people with cancer were developed over 30 years ago. The toxicity of these drugs on growing bodies will leave most childhood cancer survivors with a severe chronic health condition by the time they are 50 and twice as likely to get another cancer if they reach 40. Of the 853 children that will be diagnosed with cancer in Australia in 2020, 1 in 4 will not celebrate their 21st birthday.
Please contact your local Federal Member of Parliament and tell them why you believe they need to do more for children & young people with cancer.
You should say:
1. Who you are and why you care about childhood & young people’s cancers
2. It’s time to give childhood & young people’s cancers the attention, funding
and policy they need to significantly improve survival rates and patient outcomes
3. Australian Governments need to provide funding for routine whole genome sequencing for every child and young person with cancer.
